Improving Research Supervisory Skills

A six day workshop on “Supervising Research Dissertations: From Formulation to Completion” was organized under the auspices of the Centre for Educational Research of MIER College of Education to sharpen the research supervisory skills of its faculty members. Dr. Lokesh Kaul, Prof. Emeritus and Former Dean Faculty of Education, H.P. University was the Chief Resource Person cum mentor for the workshop. Chairman MIER, Dr. Arun Gupta was the Guest of Honour. Dr. Renu Gupta Director MIER in her welcome address introduced Dr. Lokesh Kaul as an eminent educationist who has achieved laurels in the area of Educational Research and has contributed a lot to the growth of research in the entire country. Others present on this occasion were Dr. Adit Gupta, Joint Director MIER, Dr D.R Kapoor, HOD Centre for Educational Research, Dr B.L. Raina, HOD Post Graduate Department and Dr Surinder Kaur, Administrator along with all faculty members of the MIER college of Education.

 

Dr. Arun K. Gupta in his address stressed the need for developing the research supervisory skills in the faculty members so that they could guide the research scholars in the right manner. For this they need to develop necessary skills right from the formulation to supervising research scholars through various systematic stages of research for its logical conclusion and presentation. Congratulating the organizers, Dr. Gupta said that MIER has emerged as one of the leading institutions where innovations in Education, Research, Training and New Technologies are initiated and experimented. He exhorted the faculty members to extract, imbibe and assimilate the nuances of conducting research and embarking on the extremely challenging but rewarding journey of research.

 

In the six day workshop Dr. Lokesh Koul threw light on the nature of Educational research and discussed at length about the concept, process and steps in conducting research. He also explained the difference between various research methodologies and emphasized the need of cooperation, involvement, logistic support, courage and local and specific applicability. He suggested that the topics for research should be related to the grass root problems and also stressed that competence should be developed in creating good questionnaires, conducting case studies and developing specific tools of measurement. Dr Kaul also elaborated on the paradigm of Qualitative and Quantitative Research and their various types with special mention to the Qualitative Approach which talks about descriptive, experimental, historical, ethenographic, grounded and case study methods. He acquainted the participants with the four indicators of quality education as access, equity, relevance and excellence and stressed that the research proposals should be developed keeping in view these quality indicators. In subsequent sessions, Prof. Koul invited all the participants, to present their research topics which were discussed, modified and improved through group interaction. Finally details of each research proposal were discussed and the proposals were refined in the light of feedback.

 

The Workshop concluded by distribution of certificates to the participants.
