Workshop on Advancing Gender Equality through CEDAW

Smt. Shanti Gupta Centre for Women Studies (SSGCWS), MIER organized a one-day workshop on the theme “Advancing Gender Equality through CEDAW”. The resource person was Dr. Malvika Upadhya, an eminent social scientist from Delhi. Dr. Upadhya said that gender equality is essential for the achievement of human rights for all. Women work two-thirds of the world’s working hours and produce half of the world’s food, yet they earn only 10% of the world’s income and own less than 1% of the world’s property.

Therefore, to fight all forms of discrimination against women on an international platform, a convention for the elimination of discrimination against women (CEDAW) was set up by United Nations 1979. Dr. Malvika comprehensively explained the structure of the convention. She also elaborated on the areas of preview of the convention .The resource person and the participants also shared their real-life experiences in addition to many inspirational stories and provided strategies to eliminate discrimination against women. The programme was conducted by Ms. Sheweta Langeh a B.Ed. semester 1st student.
