A guest lecture was organized by the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, MIER College of Education on the topic ‘State of Democracy in South Asia’. The speaker for the session was Prof. Baljit Singh, Head, Department of Political Science, University of Jammu. He was warmly welcomed by Dr. Monika Bajaj, Head of the School. The lecture explored the historical trajectory and current status of democracy in South Asian countries. Prof. Singh analysed the role of significant stakeholders in fostering democratic values. He underlined the structural and operational challenges prevalent in South Asia countries that often emerges as impediments to democratization. He prescribed the plausible ways for consolidating democracy and suggested ‘Consociational Democracy’ as one of the alternatives. The session concluded with an engaging question and answer segment. Principal, Prof. Adit Gupta, appreciated and reverberated the need for holding talks on such pertinent topics that benefits the academia at large. The session culminated with presenting a memento to the speaker. Dr. Nandini Puri, Assistant Professor, delivered a vote of thanks, and Ms. Pihu Bharadwaj, a third year student of B.A.(Hons.) Political Science student, skilfully compered the event.
