Workshop on First Aid and Casualty Management Services

DATE Apr 11, 2025

The NSS Unit of MIER College of Education (Autonomous) successfully organized an insightful and hands-on workshop on “First Aid and Casualty Management Services” on April 11, 2025. The initiative aimed to empower students with crucial life-saving skills and knowledge to respond effectively in emergency situations. Prof. Nishta Rana, Head School of Education, Dr. Monika Bajaj Head School of Social Science and Humanities, Dr. Bharti Tandon, Deputy Head SoE along with the faculty members and students attended the workshop.
A specialized team from the Civil Defense Organization, Jammu, served as the resource persons for the workshop. The team included Mr. Paramjeet (Chief Warden), Mr. R. Vijay Mangotra (Deputy Chief Warden), Mr. Rajinder Kumar and Mr. Purushotam Kumar (Instructors), and Mr. R.D. Saini (Sub Inspector). Their expertise added immense value to the training session.
The event commenced with a formal welcome address by Ms. Ishika Bali, a B.Ed Semester II student, while Ms. Ashiya, B.Ed Semester IV student and also an enthusiastic NSS volunteer, efficiently conducted the program. During the session, the experts emphasized the importance of first aid and casualty management through the Triage System, which categorizes patients using colored tags—red, yellow, green, or black—based on the severity of injuries. This system, they noted, enables responders to prioritize care and, if necessary, relocate casualties to safer areas.
Participants were trained on key first responder principles such as scene assessment, ensuring safety, and seeking professional help promptly. Practical demonstrations were conducted on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), managing breathing obstructions, responding to snakebites, and the correct use of fire extinguishers. The hands-on approach ensured that students not only gained theoretical knowledge but also understood the practical application of these essential skills.
Dr. Adit Gupta, Director and Principal of MIER College of Education, commended the NSS Unit for organizing the timely and impactful workshop. He emphasized, “First aid is crucial in emergencies where every second counts. Quick and informed actions can make the difference between life and death. NSS volunteers must be well-prepared, as they often serve on the frontlines of disaster relief and community support.”
The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Ananya, a B.A. Hons Psychology, Semester VI student, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to the resource persons and organizers. The event was held under the supervision of Dr. Komal Sharma, NSS Programme Officer, whose guidance and coordination ensured the smooth execution of the program.
