Guest Lecture on Development of an Attitude Scale
In the series of guest lectures, the Center for Educational Research (CER) MIER College of Education organized a guest lecture on the theme “Development of an Attitude Scale”. The resource person was Prof. Vishal Sood, Dean and Head, School of Education, Central University of Himachal Pradesh, Dharamshala. Prof. Adit Gupta, Principal MIER College of Education presided over the lecture. Dr. Moolraj Sharma, HoD PG Department, Dr. Rohnika Sharma, HoD UG Department, Dr. Nishta Rana, Head CER along with the faculty of both UG and PG Departments and the students of the PG Department attended the lecture.
Dr. Moolraj Sharma, HoD PG Department extended a warm welcome to the resource person and introduced him as an expert in the field of Psychometry, Research Methodology, Statistical Data analysis and Educational Measurement and Evaluation. He further said that Prof. Sood has published his work and presented both at national and international conferences. Additionally, he has delivered more than 100 invited lectures and produced numerous video lectures from the platforms of NIOS, IGNOU which are available on YouTube and telecasted on Swayamprabha.
In his lecture, Dr. Sood said research tool construction in social sciences is different from positive sciences or pure sciences as in social sciences the focus in on assessing behaviour which is dynamic in nature. He opened his deliberation explaining the classification of research instrument based on the nature of the behaviour characteristics, purpose of research instrument, use of the research tool and types of items in the instrument. Furthermore, he emphasized that there are some essentials that a researcher has to keep in mind while framing the research tool which include: domain of the study, reviewing theoretical and empirical research, identifying the areas and subareas, preparing the item pool, considering the nature of the population and availability of time, resources, and material. He comprehensively explained preparing the preliminary draft of the attitude scale and its requirements which results in the editing phase of the rough draft of the tool. Prof. Sood explained the next step in the development of the attitude scale which involves pilot testing followed by item analysis. He also deliberated on estimating validity and reliability of the attitude scale and preparing the final draft of the tool.
This was followed by an active interaction session conducted by Dr. Monika Bajaj and Dr. Bharti Tandon, members of CER where the faculty members and students clarified their doubts and queries.
Dr. Adit Gupta in his presidential remarks thanked the resource person for explaining various components of developing an attitude scale in a very comprehendible manner with examples. Further adding, he said that as researchers should religiously follow the different steps in constructing an attitude scale and establish its consistency and measure the purpose for which it is developed.
Dr. Nishta Rana, Dy. Head PG Department and Head CER presented a formal Vote of Thanks to the distinguished speaker and the audience.
