SPEAKER Ms. Tanya Dev Gupta
To commemorate International Women’s Day, the Smt. Shanti Gupta Centre for Women Studies (SSGCWS) organized a program “Sharing of Experiences” in which Ms. Tanya Dev Gupta, a renowned singer and artist was the resource person. Dr. Renu Gupta, Chairperson MIER chaired the session. Dr. Adit Gupta, Principal and Director MIER, Mrs. Rupa Gupta, Joint Director and Director CWS, Mrs. Ruchika Gupta, Joint Director MIET, HoDs and Deputy HoDs of various departments of the college along with the students and faculty attended the session.
Dr. Reeta Dwivedi extended a warm welcome to the resource person and audience. Mrs. Rupa Gupta formally introduced the resource person to the audience and said Ms. Tanya is a Jammu-based singer who has made a mark in Bollywood. She was selected to perform in the Asian Games in Guangzhou. Ms. Tanya has sung songs in many languages and has shared the stage with well-known artists both at the national and international level. She was a guest faculty at Film & Music Academy and performed at many mega-events.
Ms. Tanya began sharing her views by telling her that she could excel in her life as her parents respected and encourage her to follow her dreams instead of joining the medical profession as her father is a renowned doctor. She emphasized that her academic journey started from the Model Academy School and feels proud be a Modelite. From a very early age, she loved music specially listening to old songs and also had the passion for singing. Ms. Tanya recalled being in the first batch in the PG music program in Jammu. She learned music from legendary Suresh Wadikar and many others. She said the theater has helped her to build confidence and also to overcome stage fear. Talking about her hobbies, she told that she loves to do oil painting and travel to explore new places and cultures. She reiterated that even though women face a lot of politics and roadblocks in the profession, nobody can stop her from touching the sky if she has talent, skill and work hard to realize her goals. Sharing her lessons of life, she said you need to be prepared to face the hardships of life, identify your passion and excel in it, follow your dreams and be focused. She said women need to fight exploitation at all levels to create space and a place for other women. In an interactive session, Ms. Tanya answered to various queries of the students and faculty.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Renu Gupta said we as teachers need to revive “guru shishya” parampara in education and be as mentors and role models for our students. Women need to question stereotype roles, myths and exploitations to instrumental the change in the society. She gave 4Cs that women could follow in their life namely be conscious, concerned, change and competent.
