M.Phil. Programme in Education

The Master of Philosophy in Education (M. Phil. In Education) programme is crucial for a prospective researcher at the pre-doctoral level. The programme has been designed to build the research capacity of scholars by providing a strong orientation in different areas of education. The M. Phil. programme of two semesters includes two courses – Core course and Area of Specialization. Dissertation however, is compulsory for every student. The course will also include advance seminar in which student will present a paper on any educational theme in research colloquium and clear a viva voce examination.

Objectives of M.Phil. (Education) Programmes
The students will be helped to:
1. Reflect on the basic parameters within which the system of school education operates. These are: the learner, the teacher, the teaching-learning process, pedagogy, the school context, the larger societal context, the support systems and various connections and interconnections between these parameters.
2. Appreciate that research would help to enhance efficiency, effectiveness, quality and excellence in the system of school education.
3. Develop an understanding about problems of education and methodology to explore alternative solutions.
4. Develop competency in undertaking leadership in the areas of School Education and Teacher Education
5. Develop a rational conceptualization of educational research.
6. Develop competency in undertaking independent micro and macro level research projects in the priority areas of school education and teacher education.
Eligibility

The minimum requirement for admission to the M.Phil. Programme shall be 55% of marks or an equivalent grade at Master’s Degree (M.A. Education/M.Ed.) Examination.
Note: A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/Differently-abled, or for those who had obtained their Master’s degree prior to 19th September, 1991. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 55% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures

Intake Capacity

The intake capacity for M.Phil. Programme in Education shall be as per the eligibility norms of the UGC or as approved by the Competent Authority from time to time

Course and Research Work

A student admitted to the M. Phil. (Education) Programme shall be required to take up four courses of study in the first semester and thesis in the second semester. Each course of study shall carry 100 marks. The thesis shall be evaluated out of 300 marks. The maximum marks for viva-voce shall however, be 100

Fee Structure
The following fee structure shall be applicable for M.Phil. (Education) Programme:
(i) Tuition fee = (Rs. 30,000.00/- per semester) Rs. 60,000.00 Per annum
(ii) Other charges = Rs. 5,000.00 Per annum
(iii) Examination Charges = Rs. 2,000.00 Per annum
      Grand Total = Rs. 67,000.00 Per annum

In addition, Registration fee of Rs. 300/- and Eligibility fee of Rs. 750/- (one-time fee where applicable) will be charged.

Minimum Attendance
M.Phil. Programme shall be a whole time course and a student admitted to this Programme of Study shall devote himself/herself exclusively to its pursuit. There shall be at least three contact hours per week for each course of study. Every student shall also be required to participate in Seminars/Group Discussions etc. organized by the Department during the programme of study. In order to be eligible to appear in the examination the minimum attendance required shall not be less than 80% of the lectures delivered in each course of study. Every student must also have participated in at least three seminars/group discussion sessions.
Award of Degree
The M.Phil. Degree in Education shall be awarded by the University of Jammu.
